Should I be ashamed of reading erotica?

I know many won't like me for this post, but I have to say what's on my mind.
Back in the day when people hid their dirtiest deeds from prying eyes, if a naughty secret of a famous celebrity leaked out, everyone went bonkers, throwing stones at glass houses. How could they do this? Shame on them, etc. Admitting that they did something saucy behind closed doors themselves was out of the question.
Now, anything and everything goes. People commit crimes they are no longer ashamed of, while others become whoever (or whatever) they choose to be. We are living in a world where freedom of speech escalated to a whole new level, and people are free to dress, talk, walk and love the way they want.
And that's awesome! (Well, the free-to-love bit anyway). People shouldn't have to hide who they are or who they want, just because it's different to what the majority is used to. If there weren't different tastes, there would be no music, no theatre, and no poetry. Remember Sapho, the very first known lesbian writer?
But anyway, that's not entirely my point. Even in this day and age, it isn't easy to be different or to admit to doing something publicly, even if everyone is doing it behind closed doors.
I still remember when Fifty Shades of Grey came out and women were so ashamed of reading it in public that many ended up wrapping it in a plain cover, hiding tis true nature. Reading smut in public, and heaven forbid; enjoying it is still unacceptable for some and an act they would hide till the day they die.
But should you be ashamed of your desires?
When men can do just about everything they want, watching porn openly and then bragging about it, why do women feel the need to hide their desires? There is still one rule for one and another rule for another. Sneaking off for a cheeky hour with a book boyfriend, or skipping the dishes to spend more time with the dominant hero within the pages has always felt right, and yet, talking about it is still taboo.
Sadly, this also means that for many of us, steamy sex isn't confined within the sheets, but only manifests in the books we read. And it shouldn't be like that! Not at all. If our partners aren't aware that we read smut and actually want to experience some of it, they will never know just how unsatisfied we are in the bedroom.
I truly believe that open communication could change this. There are many of us out there who took the plunge and came out of the closet as avid erotica readers and/or authors. And I have to tell you a secret: it's quite refreshing. And satisfying and...
Where was I?
Yes, the big question: is there something wrong with you if you read erotica? The answer is really simple: absolutely not. There is something wrong with the world for not being more open about it, the same way it's open to just about anything else.
But don't worry ladies, our time will come. Until then, why not break the chains and let a few men into our dirty little secret? You won't regret it, I promise.
